With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections nearing, the BJP has revived advocacy efforts to include first-floor slum dwellers under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) and PM-Awas Yojana. Currently, only ground-floor residents are eligible for concessional housing—either free under SRA or ₹2.5 lakh under PM‑AY.
Former corporator Vinod Mishra and guardian minister Ashish Shelar are preparing a cabinet proposal so that pre-2011 first-floor residents also become eligible. If approved, this policy could assure housing for over a lakh slum families. BJP leadership claims this aligns with PM Modi’s “Housing for All” mission, while critics see the move as a strategic vote‑gaining tactic.
